Poems 1773, Edited by Lisa Vargo and Allison Muri
McCarthy and Kraft note that the tankard belonged to Barbauld's father, who used it to drink water (257n). From the epic invocation, Barbauld makes use of the mock epic, echoing both Milton and Pope's Rape of the Lock to lament its sad fate.
