The first balloon voyage with human passengers, over any distance, took place on 21 November 1783. The two aeronauts, M. Pilatre de Roziers and the Marquis d'Arlandes, took off in a seventy-foot balloon from the gardens of La Muette, near Paris, and traveled across the city. They landed unharmed in a field nearly 30,000 feet away from the departure point.
