Capital of Greece, famed as the center of classical Greek civilization, Athens is most celebrated for the reign of Pericles (443-429 BCE). Briefly the capital of the Byzantine Empire, in 1834 it became capital of the newly independent Greece. Its citadel mount is the famous Acropolis.
