Statue of Apollo Belvedere

In 1817, in Rome, Byron sat for a bust by the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen.

Mary Shelley saw the full standing sculpture known as the Apollo Belvedere in the Vatican Museum (pictured at left). As Blumberg and Crook note (p. 52n), Thomas Moore--in his biography of Byron--compared Byron's appearance to this statue (II,799).
