The Last Man, Edited by Steven E. Jones

The port town of Dover, famous for its high chalk cliffs, is the point of departure for Calais and the Continent. In this novel, despite the apparent ease of balloon flight (at least while the economy survives), it becomes the symbolic portal to the world beyond England. When in the third volume Dover is flooded, therefore, the English characters feel desperately trapped in their island country.
