In 1799, Mary Shelley's father, William Godwin, published St. Leon; A Tale of the Sixteenth Century. In this novel (which, incidentally, shares a general historical setting with Mary Shelley's later short story, "The False Rhyme"), the Count of St. Leon squanders his children's inheritance at the fashionable gaming tables of Paris.
