This sonnet was printed just below the end of Mary Shelley's "The Mourner" in the Keepsake for 1830 [publ. 1829], where, by the accident of page layout or through editorial decision, it may seem to comment on or frame the tale. Its conventionally elegaic, conventionally comforting tone, however, only serves to call attention to Shelley's more intensely psychological and intricately social concerns--despite her use of the ancient setting of Windsor.
