Ullswater

Ullswater

Ullswater, by Joseph Wright of Derby, ca. 1794-5.
(The Wordsworth Museum.)

A large Lake in Cumberland, "perhaps, upon the whole, the happiest combination of beauty and grandeur, which any of the Lakes affords. . . . [the vale is] adorned with fertile fields, cottages, and natural groves, that agreeably unite with the transverse views of the Lake" (William Wordsworth, A Guide Through the District of the Lakes for the Use of Tourists and Residents, 1810).
