"2096"


The twenty-first century dates are, in general, reminders of the future-setting of this novel--which is not always otherwise especially futuristic.

But as Blumberg and Crook (p. 254n) point out, 2096 in this case seems an inconsistent date, when we compare it to "2092" above and "2098" below. Perhaps this is simply a slip for "2097."
