The Collected Letters of Robert Southey Part 3

1272. Robert Southey to Charles Watkin Williams Wynn, 3 February 1807 *

My Dear Wynn

I have begun upon Brazil. [1]

In that letter upon the English Parliament there some must be something blotted out & some qualifying & characterizing passages inserted. – In particular as to what is said about Lawyers. What should be said is – that there is no way for {by which} men of talents xx from the middle class {can get into Parliament,} (who are of course best acquainted with the interests of that class & those beneath them, & what they can best bear) xxx unless they come in as adherents of a party. – in which the probability therefore is (as the fact is) that the independant members will want talents, & the men of talents will want independance but it is the union of independance & talents which the House & the Nation want: ie which is desirable in a Spanish Cortes.

I am greatly in want of the France Antartique of Thevet. [2]  Will you ask Heber if he has it. In Germany they let books from the public libraries go free by the Post. It is well for the Mail Coach Horses which keep this road that this is not the case here.

Your godson Herbert is arrived at x a very kissable age, & begins to smile & crow at his father, who talks as volubly to him as he did to the Welsh witch of Llanberris. [3]

God bless you
