A Nobleman Listening to Music

Item Description:

This image depicts a "typical" Indian nobleman, in full Muslim attire, being entertained in his home by musicians. The stark interior of his home can be contrasted with the brightly-colored, ornate homes of most Indian noblemen (see the image of Raja Jagat Prakash in this gallery), and seems to more closely resemble the interiors of British bungalows in India. This hybrid style exemplifies the transculturation which occured during the Romantic period, as well as demonstrating some of the ways in which such hybridity could be used to subvert the restrictions of British-Indian colonial society .
