Uxmal: House of the Dwarf and House of the Nuns

Item Description:

Catherwood's rendering of the Mayan city of Uxmal visually invokes notions of the picturesque landscape formed during the Romantic period; consequently, the image combines a concern with scientific accuracy, resulting in the use of the camera lucida, with an interest in the picturesque vision espoused by Romantic ideals.  This marriage would continue to be exercised in the illustrations of other travelers to Mexico into the late nineteenth century.
