2379. Robert Southey to Grosvenor Charles Bedford, 18 February 1814 *
My dear Grosvenor
You have here two books of Roderick, – let the Docstor have them as soon as you can. – And when you have cast your eye over the Ode (if you have not seen it before) put a cover upon it, & dispatch it by the three-penny post to Streatham, – to my Uncle for whom I have thus transcribed it.
I x am looking every day for Rosenhagens frank with the former books, – pray send them with as little delay as can be made to suit your convenience, – for the printer is close upon them, & they will require a few days of reconsideration here.
The 14th book is finished but not transcribed
Feby. 18. 1814.
A frank used to send MSS books of Roderick; it came courtesy of Anthony Rosenhagen (1778–1854), financial expert and friend of Landor. He started life as a junior civil servant, but rose swiftly to be private secretary to the Chancellor of the Exchequer 1811–1815. BACK
