1385. Robert Southey to Charles Watkin Williams Wynn, [late November/early December 1807] *
My dear Wynn
The Lisbon news, which has just reached me, has set my whole system in that state of fermentation which ten years ago would have found vent in an ode. Now, long disuse has given occasioned reluctance to the effort.
Oh that I had been present at the departure of the Braganzas! – for with all that imbecillity & bigotry which nature & education have given Prince Joaõ he has shown himself a Braganza now. [1] – There are some bones which should have been taken with him & not left in a xxxx conquered country. which some of them I could have followed barefoot to the water side. But if I write thus I had better be writing verse –
God bless you
