1434. Robert Southey to Edward Rushton, 29 March 1808 *
My dear Sir
I have made enquiry concerning the expence of vignettes for a foolscap octavo page, & find it to be about ten guineas, design & engraving included. Ewins is recommended as the best designer, the choice of an engraver depends upon the subject, – one man excelling in figures, another in landscape, – a third in buildings. But in this there is no fear of chusing amiss. The main difficulty is in getting designs to ones own mind, – & this I have always found so diff great, that it has made me give up the attempt as hopeless.
If choice or chance should at any time lead you to our Land of Lakes, I hope you will remember that there is a man living beside Derwentwater who loves poetry & liberty as x righteously as you do, & who will xxx be right glad to bid you welcome there.
